Exactly what is a "religious"?
When used as a noun (rather than an adjective), the term "religious" refers to a man or woman who has made a formal profession to an Institute of Consecrated Life, or Society of Apostolic Life. Although the Gospel calls all people to lives of holiness and service to God's people, "religious" have responded to God's call to live their faith within the context of a community.

Do religious work for the bishop, or are they autonomous?
Both, in a sense. All religious carry out their mission under the auspices of the bishop in whose diocese they live and work. At the same time, they maintain a certain level of independence from the structures of the diocese, giving them the freedom to pursue their particular mission. Still, we are all one Church, with the local bishops as our shepherds and guides.

I'm interested in learning more about religious life. Who should I talk to?
You should talk to the religious you know, and whose mission appeals to you. You should also contact the diocesan office for vocations [link], who can assist you with your discernment, and can put you in contact with the appropriate vocations director. Most of all, you should talk to God, developing the life of prayer you will need to help guide your discernment.
