Visits Saint Luke School

On Monday, April 12th, Saint Luke School received a special visit from award winning author and Whitestone resident, Susan L. Roth. Ms. Roth, is both an author and illustrator of children’s books. Her illustrations are unique in that they are collages created by various mediums. Susan Roth is also the author of numerous heartwarming children’s books, such as The Biggest Frog In Australia, Hard Hat Area, It’s A Dog’s New York, and most recently the award winning book, Listen To The Wind: The Story of Dr. Greg And Three Cups Of Tea. This particular book has received global recognition and is the inspiration for her global peace effort, “Let’s Hold Hands”.

The message Susan Roth promotes is one of acceptance. If we can accept each other, regardless of race, religion and beliefs, then, we can ensure world peace. Her message is delivered to participating schools and libraries in the form of paper dolls created by children.

Ms. Roth asked us to join this effort, and we gladly accepted. Prior to her visit, all students from grades Pre-K through Grade 8 created paper dolls resembling themselves. These were presented to her during her visit. A school assembly was held to welcome Ms. Roth. Her visit consisted of a heartwarming tale explaining the inspiration and creation of ListenToThe Wind. She also showed a PowerPoint presentation on the many steps involved in making this wonderful book.

The students were also given the opportunity to ask Ms. Roth questions. It was both an honor and a privilege to meet and speak with such an accomplished author.

Saint Luke School, its administration and its faculty are committed to fostering a love and appreciation for books and reading. It is our intentions to continue this mission and have other authors visit the school.

Haiti Outreach Efforts

Our Elementary Schools have demonstrated a down pouring of love and sacrifice through their fundraising efforts over the past few weeks!

Many of our Catholic Elementary Schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn have been deeply affected by the Haiti Disaster. Many students who attend our Catholic Elementary Schools have lost family members and their homes. The schools that have large Haitian student populations are scattered throughout the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens.

The Superintendent Office of School ~ School Support Services has been receiving daily emails and calls from our schools asking where their Haiti Outreach collections should be sent. All collections will go to Catholic Relief Services. The Catholic Elementary Schools that have reported their collections, have raised over $66,000.  The schools’ fundraising activities have been very clever. Reading the ways of how our schools have demonstrated a down pouring of love will touch your heart.

Read the attachment to see how our schools open their hearts to the victims of the Haiti Earthquake.

Catholic Schools week is an annual national celebration. This year’s theme is “Dividends for Life” which emphasizes the benefits of a Catholic school education.

According to Karen Ristua, NCEA president, “Catholic schools provide good things for students and families – high expectations and daily experience of faith. In these challenging times, the theme also reminds parents that the dividends of a Catholic school education – students prepared in faith, knowledge, morals and discipline – last a lifetime. There is no better way to invest in a child’s future – or the future of our world.”

All of our schools in the Diocese of Brooklyn will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week.  Catholic school celebrations are listed on our “School Happenings” page. If you are interested in a school that is not listed, give the school a call and the school will provide you with their schedule of events.

We asked the students of the Diocese of Brooklyn “How has Catholic education helped you?” and “What makes Catholic education unique?"

See what our students said about their Catholic education. You can read the students’ quotes by clicking on the link below:
